#OTalk – 25th February 2014 – Thinking of Locum work?

By request of the #OTalk community the discussion on the 25th February will be exploring the topic of working as a locum. Rehana @LabmedOT has kindly volunteered to support this chat.

Rehana has written this introduction to get the discussion going. We hope that anyone thinking of exploring work through a locum agency and those that have already done so will join us to explore this aspect of the working community.

I’d like to thank #OTalk for the opportunity to help provide more information on locum options for both new graduates and experienced workers.

There are two ways to get into a role for newly qualified Occupational Therapists. The first is starting as a Band 4 Assistant and then building up a few months experience within the NHS before moving into a Band 5 Occupational Therapy role. The second is the New Graduate Scheme which is provided in the North West of England, this allows new graduates to go straight into work as a Band 5 with Band 6/7 support in place.

Before you start working as a locum you will need to register with an agency, they will require the following documents:
• DBS (CRB) check
• Passport & Visa
• Qualification certificate
• HCPC certificate
• 2 references (which your recruiter will get)

Certain agencies will hold contracts with NHS Trusts across the UK. For example Derbyshire Community Healthcare Services which covers a large number of hospitals in the area has a contract with only a couple of GPS approved agencies.

These Government Procurement Service Suppliers (GPS, formally PASA/Buying Solutions) will require several other checks such as:
• Health checks: Hepatitis B, TB, Measles, Rubella, Varicella
• Practical and online training
• Agency specific forms

It’s important to remember to be as prepared as possible with the above documents when joining a new locum agency as this can cut down time between registration and you being placed into a role.

Once you have a couple of years postgraduate experience as an Occupational Therapist, more options will become available to you regarding both location and pay rate. I’ve found that managers are very welcoming to Band 5 and Band 6s who are able to jump into roles and hit the ground running.

There are a wide variety of roles available through locum agencies ranging from Band 3 Rehab Support Workers through to Band 8a Managers.

For any Labmed Recruitment Agency specific questions please DM me and I will respond ASAP. (Note from OTalk team, we thank @LabMedOT for volunteering to host this evenings chat and answer questions from our community, but in the interest of impartiality would point out that there are other agencies available)

Here are a couple of questions we can discuss during the chat:

• What are your expectations from a locum agency?

• If you have already been a locum, what have you found useful that you can share with new starters?

#OTalk 18 February 2014 – Occupational Therapy and Eating Disorders

The week of 24th February – 2nd March 2014 is Eating Disorders Awareness Week. Leading up to this, we’re having an #OTalk about eating disorders and occupational therapy on 18 February 2014 at 8pm GMT (click the link for your local time), which @pd2ot will be co-hosting with me (@geekyOT). You don’t need to be an occupational therapist to participate – anyone with an interest in eating disorders is welcome.

Check out my blog post ‘What do you know about eating disorders and occupational therapy?‘ for a range of resources you may find interesting/useful, and please recommend any additional resources in the comments.

If you are new to tweetchats, have a look at this guide by our AnzOTalk colleagues and feel free to get in touch with me if you get stuck. Hope to see you there!

#OTalk 11th Feb 2014 – Safer Internet Day

Tuesday 11th February 2014 is Safer Internet Day.

The theme is – Let’s create a better Internet together

Safer Internet Day Descriptionreference
Safer Internet Day 2014 – Let’s create a better internet together.
Safer Internet Day (SID) is organised in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre in February of each year to promote the safe and responsible use of online technology and mobile phones for children and young people. Safer Internet Day 2014 will take place on Tuesday 11th February 2014, with the theme ‘let’s create a better internet together’. The day offers the opportunity to focus on both the creative things that children and young people are doing online, as well as the role and responsibility that all stakeholders have in helping to create a better internet.
The UKSIC provides Safer Internet Day specific resources and support for children and young people, parents and carers as well as teachers and school staff and facilitates a wide range of organizations to join together to amplify the safer internet message.
The UK Safer Internet Centre is a partnership of three leading charitable organisations, Childnet International, the South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL) and the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF). These organisations are committed to working to make a safer and better internet. All partners recognise the unparalleled opportunities the internet offers and actively encourage its positive use for social, leisure, economic and educational advancement. The partners all work towards the Childnet target; to make the Internet a great and safe place for children. The UK Safer Internet Centre is online at http://www.saferinternet.org.uk.
Before the chat

  • Why not take the quiz and see how safely you use the Internet. Please note you can select more than one option per question – in fact you should select all options that you think are correct.
  • Google yourself to review your online identity/digital footprint – reflect on what you discovered – share with us in the chat if anything surprised you and if you have decided to make any changes as a result.

During the chat

Consider the following:

What does a better internet look like?

Quick debate – reference
“Websites and services that allow you to communicate anonymously have made the internet a better place.”
How accountable do you feel for your actions online?

(I can see a link to our early chat on bullying and the great work by the late Terry Olivas-De La O)

  • Safer Internet Day is focused on children and young people but what client groups that you work with do you think could benefit from work on safer use of the internet, and why?
  • Considering our unique skill set what could OTs add to this project/ how could we address these issues in practice?
  • What could occupational science research add to our understanding of how people use the Internet?

After the chat

  • Can you take time to offer to look at people’s privacy settings with them.
  • What are you going to do to help make the Internet a better place?
  • How can you incorporate awareness of Safer Internet use in your practice?

Gill has kindly agreed to step into my place and host this chat so that I can take advantage of my friend winning tickets to a musical. I’ll review the tweets and post the summary, maybe with a little addition of my own, in a couple of days time.

Kirsty

#OTalk Journal / Media Club – 4th March 2014

Thank you to Eileen Hagarty (@eileenhegarty7) for volunteering to host March’s #OTalk Journal / Media Club.

March will be the first time that the media aspect of the club had been embraced and we hope you enjoy it!

The Great British Paraorchestra (Hickson, 2012) – considering Music as an Occupation

No matter how ill you are or disabled you are, music is always there. It’s a solid rock.”Charlotte White, The Great British Paraorchestra.”A recent study found that music was 44% likely to be present during any 2-hour period in daily living.”  Craig, 2008, p.87For March’s Journal Club, I’m bringing the Media aspect of the Media/Journal Club to the fore as I propose that we discuss the Channel 4 TV programme, The Great British Paraorchestra. The programme first screened on 9th September, 2012 but is still accessible on the 4OD archive at http://www.channel4.com/programmes/the-great-british-paraorchestra/4od. You will need to set up a free account on 4OD and then you can view the programme.

I have recently started my first occupational therapy post in mental health. To keep up my skills while job-seeking, I volunteered with a group that provides performing arts classes to people with intellectual disability. In the past two years working with this group, I have become aware of the power of music as a tool for self-expression and social inclusion. Many of our participants are also able to use their love of music to overcome anxieties and to give them the motivation to work on helpful patterns and behaviours.

And it seems our performing arts group are not alone in these outcomes. Craig (2008) list many ways that occupational therapists use music: improving motor function for people with Parkinson’s disease; enhancing memory function in people with Alzheimer’s; soothing anxiety, improving mood, enhancing social participation and decreasing pain across a variety of settings.

However Craig (2008, p74) also states that “while many practitioners are using music in their treatment, most are not receiving education or conducting research on the topic, resulting in a lack of theory and efficacy reports justifying the modality”.  Occupational therapists are interested in fostering creativity and the main medium taught and researched is arts and crafts. However, music is a universal experience and may prove equally worthy of consideration as a creative medium. I hope to generate discussion points around the use of music in occupational therapy in March’s media/journal club and welcome contributions from all.

Abstract

Inspired by his five-year-old daughter, who has cerebral palsy, and by the principles of the Paralympics, conductor Charles Hazlewood is determined to create a platform for talented disabled musicians at the top of their game.As an internationally renowned conductor who over the past six years has conducted more than 50 orchestral world premieres, from Carnegie Hall to the BBC Proms, Charles has decided to form an innovative orchestra made up entirely of talented, disabled musicians. The Great British Paraorchestra explores the challenges and the lack of opportunities facing disabled musicians in Britain today. They’ve all got stories to tell: Nicholas McCarthy, born without a right arm, is making a name for himself as a left-handed pianist; professional trumpeter Clarence Adoo, who once played in Courtney Pine’s jazz band, was paralysed from the neck down in a car accident, and now makes music on a computer using his head; and Charles puts on a fundraising concert for Charlotte White to enable her to purchase the assistive technology she needs as they prepare for their first public concert. This film explores music’s power to bring people together. It charts the formation of the British Paraorchestra and explores the musicians’ own relationship with music.

Discussion points for #Otalk

·         What is the main message that this programme intends to convey?

·         Are there any additional meanings that you derived from it, given your background as an occupational therapist?

·         Do you think occupational therapy has anything to offer to the Great British Paraorchestra? What would you do if you were working with them?

·         Do you use music in your practice? If yes, how? If no, why not?

·         What are the advantages/disadvantages of using visual media like this television programme to convey a message as opposed to written media such as a journal article?

·         The Great British Paraorchestra works with elite disabled musicians. Do you think the techniques and strategies they use apply to a wider population?

·          Given what you have seen in this programme, do you think you could use music more with your client group?

#OTalk 4th February 2014 – All Change…

Change-Ahead-Newspaper

Unfortunately the Journal Club topic for February has had to be postponed until 2nd September.

As regular OTalkers will know Dai Davies’s (@Dai2584) hosted a chat on The Power of Ideas in January.

Throughout the month of January we have been compiling our ResOTlutions for 2014.

This week also sees The ‘Time to Change‘ campaign hold ‘Time to Talk‘ and the ‘NHS Change Day’ campaign launch the ‘School for Healthcare Radicals‘.

So we are asking for one last ReOTlution and exploring the role that Occupational Therapists can take with any or all of the above ideas. Please also feel free to bring any of your own ideas to the chat.

Post Chat Updates…

Thank you to the 35 people who joined the chat for generating 203 tweets…. this had the potential to make 320,604 impressions on the twitterverse.
