Hello everyone; this is Allison Sullivan. I’ve attempted to organize the relevant themes from our “Occupational Artistry as Antidote to Occupational Science” #occhat from Tuesday, July 17.  I enjoyed this chat immensely; I find these issues to be near and dear to my heart, but so often not acknowledged by me in any true professional context of late. I hope you will enjoy, discuss, debate, and reflect on our discussion further. Please feel free to email me if you would like to continue the dialogue outside of twitter: send me a DM on twitter or inbox on facebook, and I will respond with my email address.

ACT 1, Scene1: And now, let’s hear a word from our sponsors…

First off, I thought to include some relevant, essentially “promotional” tweets, which preceded the chat itself. I do this in an effort to acknowledge the “art of promotion”. Why is that important, you ask? Well, as I continue to reflect on Karen Jacob’s 2012 Slagle lecture, “Promoting Occupational Therapy: Words, Images, and Action”, I believe one way people may demonstrate their willingness to dive into the “art” of therapy, if you will, is to be daring enough to promote our ideas to others. Tweets that promoted this discussion in advance warrant inclusion in this summary due to their relevance in attracting an audience and participants for a performance of sorts: voluntary, meaningful discourse on the role of art in therapy in 140 characters a thought for a full hour. And so:

ACT 1, scene 2: Social niceties and Collegiality:

The next group of chats preceded the discussion itself, but continued into the discussion for its duration. I included them in this summary due to my belief that, on an individual and personal level, they exemplify the caring nature that according to Mosey, defines the art in therapy. This is one of the significant themes of our discussion. Participants in this group take the time to let others know if they won’t be attending, check in on each other, and encourage each other in furthering their professional expertise and artistry. This caring nature nourishes the environment in which creativity can flourish, in the long tradition of artist communities such as Yaddo, in Saratoga Springs, New York:

Act 2 Scene 1: Defining the Art of Therapy

Now our discussion begins in earnest.  The first major question about which the group got excited concerned the definition of the “art” of practice. The metaphor of the therapeutic relationship as a dance was introduced, and the role creativity plays in the “artistic process” were the first ideas to see widespread support. This led to a long and thoughtful discussion that essentially ran for the remainder of the chat, concerning features that were felt to define the art in therapy, including: creative applications of science knowledge, the caring nature of a therapeutic relationship (introduced in Act 1), therapeutic use of self, client-centeredness, holism, complexity, individuality and communication skills Attempts were also made to define science as a way of framing the definition of art.

Allisulli: Question for the group: What defines the #art of practice and how is an

antidote to the #science of practice? #occhat

Tue Jul 17 12:06:16 PDT 2012

Beingyourdoing: #occhat occupational artistry -anyone else think therapeutic relationship feels like a dance?

Tue Jul 17 12:03:02 PDT 2012

Helen_otuk: @beingyourdoing #occhat, a dance good analogy.

Tue Jul 17 12:06:20 PDT 2012

BillWongOT: @beingyourdoing I think so-from both the client and therapist perspectives

Helen_otuk: @beingyourdoing are we always dancing to the same tune? #occhat

BillWongOT @Helen_otuk @beingyourdoing good question-not always, but who is the

ACT 2, Scene 2: Does our current healthcare system encourage the art of practice?

Another significant thread to emerge from the discussion, interestingly enough, ran in tandem with the task of defining the art of therapy. This concerned the intentionally provocative question as to whether or not the current healthcare system encourages the art of practice. While this was a shorter thread, the concern and frustration with modern healthcare delivery systems was clearly voiced. Responses to this question noted that the realities of productivity, efficiency, and documentation all create barriers to investing in the art of therapy as it was being defined in the previous thread. Some participants demonstrated a darkly humorous approach to their tweets in this addressing this topic, another way I believe healthcare practitioners sometimes speak to their artistic needs in highly clinical settings. This theme also opened the gates to the next major idea the group considered: should our priority as clinicians be on the art or the science of practice?

Allisulli: Agree or Disagree: “Our current health care system does not encourage the art

of practice” #occhat

Tue Jul 17 12:01:01 PDT 2012

ACT 2. Scene 3: Which comes first, the Science or the Art?

Previous discussion identifying constituents of the art of practice and constraints to exploiting this skill provoked a long and heartfelt group exploration concerning what essentially amounts to a discourse on “best practices”. Which aspect, art or science, should clinicians prioritize in practice? There was general consensus from the group that both art and science were required for best practice.

ACT 2, Scene 4:  How do we make lemonade from lemons?

Since we are a solutions-oriented field of inquiry, it is only natural that a discussion on the constraints on the practice of art in therapy would give way to a discussion of methods for ensuring its growth. Suggestions from resources and supported in group discussion included: reading and reflecting on relevant novels, blogs, social media, client stories, films, short stories, and personal reflection time.
